Free Fallin' – Tom Petty

Free Fallin' – Tom Petty

This song sums up just how I'm feeling right now, not sure what's above or below me. There's a massive release when you're not sure what's coming next, but it's also scary as hell. I feel like I'm free falling at the moment and I don't want to hit the ground, this song seems to keep popping up. It gets referenced a lot within the songwriting groups I'm part of as a masterpiece of melody. I'm not a huge Tom Petty fan, but I do like lots of his hits, plus he was a big part of the Traveling Wilburys with a collection of my other favourite artists. I've also a massive soft spot for 'I Won't Back Down."

This was from Tom Petty's first solo album which he wrote with Jeff Lynee of ELO fame. My guess would be he had the fact he was free of the confinement he had felt being in his band The Heartbreakers in his mind, suddenly he didn't have to please the others anymore. Lots of artists that come out of bands seem to do a release song when they split up. The amazing way Tom gets so much emotion and motion in just those two words is a lesson in melody. The rest of the song is a bit left behind as you just picture falling through space with nothing you can do about it. The words are telling a tale of the boys and girls who are hanging out along a boulevard in Hollywood, but they don't settle in your mind as your taken with the chorus delivery. Somehow the backing gives the lyric that freedom, it's so airy and floaty that you believe you could really be that care free.

Can't believe it's over three years since Tom passed, another Rock n Roller that left to soon.

Favourite lyric : She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis / Loves horses and her boyfriend, too
