Lost In Music – Sister Sledge

Lost In Music – Sister Sledge

So there I was just old enough to finally get into nightclubs, then my group of friends decide they want to go to the only nightclub in town that had an older age limit. Putting on my only suit, borrowing my brothers driving license, I paid my £7, which was half of my Saturday job's daily pay and in we went past the huge bouncers.
It was an older crowd so therefore they played older music, quite a long disco section, some of which bored me to tears to be honest. That DJ had a regular set list he used to play, most of the songs were their extended 'dance' versions so you could have another pint by the time the next song came on.
But songs like this one were burrowed into my brain, mostly thanks to Nile Rogers 'Chic' production, that guitar riff is infectious, plus the driving beat doesn't give up throughout. This a great vocal, I love girl groups like this where they blend their voices to make a big sound.  Sister Sledge were a big deal, this one's 1979, from their album We Are Family. That title song was another one we heard a lot, the fact that four of our crowd were cousins it was quite fitting.
'Lost In Music' stood out, especially as it was something I could relate to, the lyric is all about quitting your 9 to 5 day job to just be around music all the time. I was just starting out on my musical adventure and wasn't sure how far I could go with my songwriting. Unlike the song I did get sucked into that daily work routine but we can all still dream. I've been lost in music most days of my life, a single song can change my mood, explain what I'm feeling or just lift my spirits. It really is like a trap, a good song gets stuck in your head and if it evokes a memory probably your heart as well.

Favourite lyric : Give me the melody that's all that I ever need / The music is my salvation
